The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) verification process for restoration (Remedy) in Indonesia’s forestry sector is still a long and challenging journey. The FSC Remediation Framework aims to address past social and environmental damage, including deforestation and violations of indigenous peoples’ rights.
One major hurdle is the complexity of cases and the time required. The APRIL Group case, for instance, shows this process can take years, involving stages from identifying damage and determining remedial actions to implementation and third-party verification. The involvement of diverse stakeholders—government, local communities, NGOs, and companies—demands transparent and fair dialogue and agreement.
Furthermore, ensuring the effectiveness of on-the-ground restoration and rebuilding trust are crucial. This policy also faces criticism and demands from NGOs to ensure comprehensive recovery, not just environmentally but also socially, including resolving conflicts with local communities. Despite commitments and progress, the path to full success still requires collaborative and consistent efforts from all parties.
