Normative Standard

A normative framework is a set of principles, rules, standards, and guidelines designed to govern behavior or management practices within a particular system, organization, or sector. In the context of forestry or certification systems such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the normative framework includes official documents like principles and criteria, international generic indicators (IGIs), certification procedures, and social and environmental policies that serve as the foundation for assessing forest management performance.

The primary goal of a normative framework is to provide clear and consistent guidance on what is considered “good” or “acceptable” according to values of sustainability, social equity, and environmental responsibility. It also serves as a reference for auditors, companies, and other stakeholders in implementing or evaluating forest management practices.

Bonn, 14 May 2025 – The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) acknowledges the recent Milieu study conducted on behalf of the European Commission assessing how forest certification systems align with Closer-to-Nature Forest (CNF) Management Guidelines. The findings confirm that FSC standards already reflect core CNF principles in several EU countries and highlight FSC’s ability to balance environmental, social, and economic values in forest management.
